Early 1938 John Deere L TRACTOR Frame & Tag * The 275th styled Deere L made * Rare, Thin Tube Early L Frame The hood part shown is included and it a good solid hood, but it has been cut in the front. The tag # is readable but not in good shape as you can see like alot of the L tags due to where they were placed on the rear axle frame where they were stepped on alot. But again it is readable and you have proof then to get one of those new, perfect L serial tags made by a company in Iowa. They make these exact reproduction Deere L tags like new for around $25 if you have the tag # of the old tag to give or show them. This is a Thin Wall Tube L Frame which are rare to find on a normal Deere L. There were three types of frames in L production as you may know from looking in the parts books. Though there are exception this is the way it was supposed to work: 1. Thin Wall, Tube-(Just over 1/4 of an inch thick). Found on the 1938 unstyled tractors, and 1938 styled tractors 2. Thick Wall, Tube-(.560 of an inch thick, or barely over 1/2 inch) 1939 through 1940 3. Solid frame-1941 and onward Exceptions include during World War Two (1941-1945) some Thick Wall frames were put on a few tractors built and it is believed this was due to either limited supplies of metal or else Deere maybe found a few frames in stock. But in general these Thin Wall tube frames are pretty rare to find on a L in any event. OR - WE CAN DELIVER this anywhere in the US very reasonably for .40 cents a mile one way with a minimum of $150. So 500 miles would be $200 for example. Will arrive as described guaranteed! No tax on farm equipment. From the John Deere Collectors Guide - "Utility tractor" describes a small tractor that performs a variety of "chores." It may be the secondary tractor used for work not requiring the horsepower available in larger, primary tractors on large farms. Or, it may be the primary tractor on smaller farms. The Model "L", introduced in 1937, was the first John Deere Utility Tractor. It was "unstyled" in design up until 1938 and it had a 2-cylinder engine. But unlike that in other John Deere Tractors of the time, it was a vertical, Hercules engine. It had a foot clutch and the offset engine aided visibility while cultivating single rows. John Deere Wagon Works in Moline, Illinois built the "L". It was very popular for small field and garden work for plowing, cultivating and even lawn and pasture care. In 1941 the "LA" was introduced and was styled in design and it could pull a one 16-inch bottom. It joined the "L" whose styled version was introduced in 1938. The L by comparison could pull a one-bottom 12-inch plow in most conditions. The LA was powered with a John Deere vertical engine as was the L also starting in 1941. The LA is rated at 14.5 PTO HP and the L at 10.3 PTO HP. Both models are known to 2-Cylinder Collectors as "Baby Brother" of that Deere lineup and weigh around 2,200 lbs. and are around 7'10" long and less than 4.5 feet so they are becoming increasing popular with collectors who find them easy to trailer or truck around even in the back of a heavy capacity pickup for farm or ranch work, shows or parades. Both models look alike unless parked together and then the larger, heavier rear wheels of the LA catch the eye. Both have a standard 3 Forward, 1 Reverse Transmission. The L and LA are both rated "very good investments" in the John Deere's collector guide since they are hard to find and appreciate at a good rate. Praise: Beautiful tractor. Just as described.
